To climb or to cross?

Updated: Feb 8, 2023

There is always a point during my vacation planning where I subconsciously plan a trip up a tower or across a bridge. I didn’t notice it at first but I have a tendency to want to climb above the place I’m visiting and see it on a larger scale. In our own way, we all have bridges and towers of our own. Bridges are viewpoints that we share with others and connect us in agreement while towers are the hills we will die on. In the past decade or so we see more and more towers going up and bridges are left in disrepair. Everyday we find less and less to agree upon with our neighbors. We no longer want to or are able to connect to those around us as we grow increasingly divisive in this country.

Delaware River Tubing, NJ/PA

I was born in a tower. My circumstances do not allow for many to be able to relate with me and even though I shout down my existence to others, it is still disregarded. I did not put myself up here and yet I have to defend myself. The hardest part of inviting people into the spiral staircase is the possibility that they will still not acknowledge the trauma I’ve endured and minimize the problem that is keeping me up here.

This space I’ve created serves a very important purpose: to allow more people to connect their towers to the towers that others are trapped in and create bridges of understanding. This is the only way to fight division on an interpersonal level and I hope for all our sakes, it works.
